Humana Health Offers Tips On Healthy Living
March 12th, 2010Help for a Healthy Diet for Kids
March 12th, 2010
The trouble with a healthy diet for kids is, unless you are already eating healthy yourself, it’s more effort for you to provide. Because the same foods that make up a healthy diet for adults can be for kids, too. A little friend of my daughter recently had a dance recital we attended. I was horrified to see how many overweight kids there were. When I was in school (many years ago!), there were so few children that were overweight. What’s happened?Yes, in no small part, I do believe it’s due to a lack of a healthy diet for kids. I know, I know, we all ate a lot of sugar and food coloring, etc, when we were kids. But the planet was a cleaner, healthier place back then. Water, air, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones/antibiotics in meat, well, it all contributes to a toxic sludge that is over what the body can easily flush out on its own. And then you add the “new and improved” preservatives in food (although I’m now being told by commercial “mind control” that high fructose corn syrup is good for me! What am I, an idiot?) Anyway, the FDA even is now on board with recommendations for NINE servings of fruits and vegetables a day. If you eat just three meals per day, can you do the math on that? Your meals are mostly fruits and vegetables, the way it should be. But, how many people do you know who are coming anywhere close to that? Do you and your kids eat that way?I’ll give you an example from my own life to demonstrate. Today my daughter has (so far-we haven’t had dinner yet) apple slices with peanut butter (natural, not the ones with added sugar), pasta with tomato sauce, roast beef and fries (that was my mother-in-laws meal, not mine!), grapes, and strawberries. I’ll attempt to get two servings of veggies in at dinner. It’s easier to get the kids to eat fruit than vegetables, but I’ll take fruit over chips, pretzels and candy any day. If you count spaghetti sauce (again not the one with added sugar or high fructose corn syrup)as a serving of veggies, she’s at four. Plus at least one more for dinner, so that’s pretty good and that’s on a day I didn’t have full control of her menu. Yes, it can be a little extra work, but I feel that so much of my kids health, both now and in the future, is dependent on developing healthy eating habits. And my husband and I try to eat very healthy, too, for ourselves and to set an example, so it’s really a family affair. I think, too, that kids just aren’t as active as they once were. I’m certainly not lecturing you from MY perfect little world, don’t get me wrong, ’cause I know it’s convenient to let the TV “babysit”. And my daughter would be quite the couch tater if it were up to her. So I try to keep tabs on the time she spends watching TV. She’s still a little young to worry about video games yet. But this article is geared toward the healthy diet for kids, so let’s get back to that. Kids learn by example, more than anything else, so it’s vitally important for parents to lead. It’s the best thing for the whole family. And I know some of you may object with such complaints as “My kids won’t eat fruits” or fill-in-the-blank with whatever healthy food. SO, one tip for parents with very young kids is: Start early, Start now! And if your kids are a little older, well, I may be a big meanie, but when my girl asks for a snack, I give her a few choices, like carrots or an apple, and she can pick from those. Or, if she asks for something specifically crappy, like cheese crackers, I often will negotiate by having her eat something healthy first. If they don’t know any better than to eat healthy, that’s the best scenario of all, but it’s awfully challenging to shield them from all the junk food. By the way, since I wrote the paragraph on my daughter’s menu for the day, we’ve since had dinner. She had a bit of sweet corn and zucchini with some steak and baked potato slices with the skin on. Side note: Leaving the skin on your potatoes keeps the acid/alkaline balance in proper proportion. So when I pan-fry, bake, or make mashed potatoes, I don’t bother peeling. It’s healthier and less work!Just like anything else, it takes some practice and a little time to incorporate a healthy diet for kids and you into your everyday lifestyle. But it’s worth it.
Your Kids Are Special: Gift Them Amazing Kids’ Toys This Christmas
March 12th, 2010
Once we have children, our whole life revolves around them. We keep all our decisions attuned to their needs and do not want to belittle any demand of theirs. But wiser parents like you and me also keep close watch on our budget while fulfilling the needs of children. The fine line between need and demand of children is rapidly vanishing and all their demands fall under category of needs for them. But what are we for then? We want to pamper them but also want to inculcate in them the habits of apt expenditure. Why not then go for cheap yet quality kidsâ?? toys for our kids?Toys form the major part of kidsâ?? expression. They express their creativity through toys. Therefore it is our duty to give them the toys those help them cultivate their abilities in positive direction. It is said that right from very young age, the toys form an integral part of kidsâ?? life. Just take an example of musical toys. You will find that these musical toys make even the dullest child take notice even while in crib and react to them. Thatâ??s how you are able to form a rapport between you and your child. Where can you find good kidsâ?? toys?Well, thatâ??s a tricky question indeed. Due to a lasting boom in kidsâ?? toys, many toy manufacturers make their profits by making toys that are very cheap. But they may not utilize the right materials for the kids. You must have heard about the toys containing high amounts of lead in them. They obviously deteriorate your kidsâ?? health and you do not want them to play with such toys. Thatâ??s the reason you should be extremely careful before buying toys for your kids. Remember that online shops are better when you opt for kidsâ?? toys. Many online shoppers due to high competition pay attention to quality and also give you cheaper rates. So, online kidsâ?? toys can be safer for your kids. What are you going to gift them this Christmas?Well, I know still a few months to go for Christmas but whatâ??s wrong to plan your gift? Go online, search good sites that display lots of childrenâ??s toys in its galleries and find the one or more suitable for your kids. No doubt it is not an easy task. Once you hit online galleries, you are definitely spoilt for choice; such is the beauty of all toys. Look for the musical toys like Groovy Tunes eco-microphone or recorder to encourage the musical abilities of your kid. There are lot many others too even for younger kids. You can also choose the more homely board games for your little ones. Mikado wooden pick up sticks, magnetic travel game, and magic cube are some of the most popular choices. One word of caution though! We know you are smart enough. But remember that your kids are smarter than you. So, it will be better if you consult them before finalizing your choice. After all they are going to play with it!
Health Insurance Coverage for Kids and Womens
March 12th, 2010
Health insurance coverage for kids might seem like one of those deals that are too good to be true but this is no hoax. Most private health insurance funds in the same premiums for families with children as they do for couples without children which effectively mean you can get free private health insurance for your kids. While this might make a few couples without kids a little crabby at the thought of subsidising health insurance for someone else, it means that families with kids are in a much better position to afford private health cover without having to breaking the bank. Pennywise parents are always on the sentinel for child-friendly discounts which are why offers such as kids stay and eat for free deal are so popular during school holidays. Some health funds have decided to take their child-friendly offers even further by waiving the hospital excess. Individual health funds can however extend that age limit for dependent children up to age 25 providing that the child is still a full-time student and remains unmarried. If you are couple thinking about having your first child, you should also be aware that a 12-month waiting period usually has to be served before benefits can be claimed on behalf of the child so its very important to modify your health insurance cover before you start trying to conceive. Each health insurance fund has different offers so here are a few questions to ask when shopping around for hospital and extras cover;*At what age will my kids no longer be covered by our family policy? Are there any conditions? *Do I have to pay an excess if my child is admitted to hospital? *Are there any no-gap extras benefits for kids?Health Coverage for womens:Health insurance coverage is a critical factor in making health care reachable to women. Women with health coverage are more likely to obtain needed preventive, primary, and specialty care services, and have better access to many of the new advances in womens health. Among the 94 million women ages 18 to 64, most have some form of coverage. Nevertheless, the patchwork of different private sector and publicly-funded programs in the U. S. leaves nearly one in five non-elderly women uninsured. Nearly all women 65 and older are covered by Medicare, the national health coverage program for seniors and some people with disabilities. Outlook for the Future: Addressing Affordability: The steady growth in health costs has had an inconsistent effect on women because of their lower incomes and greater need for health care services throughout their lives. While the rate of growth in health care premiums has slowed in the past year, they have more than doubled since 1999, compared to only a 34% rise in wages during the same period. There has been rising interest among some policymakers and employers in using consumer-driven health care models to control spending. These plans with high deductibles are often used in conjunction with a tax preferred savings account.
These Early Disease Detection Tips Help Keep Your Kids Healthy!
March 12th, 2010
Keeping an eye on your kids health is fundamental to every parent, and essential to be able to deal with health problems as soon as they occur. The obvious signs you want to see are a healthy tongue free from sores, fresh cool skin with a clear complexion, bright eyes, a cool brow, regular breathing, and a normal abdomen not sticking out abnormally. A healthy appetite and thirst, with resultant normal bowel movements are fundamental signs of good health in your kids. Your kids should also be cheerful and energetic, with lots of laughter and playtime. When asleep your child should appear calm, with their features relaxed. If your child is frowning, or showing an expression of pain, you should check for signs of fever, or if any bumps and scrapes have happened in rough play. A fever could be the first sign of an onset of illness or contagious infections that kids are prone to. As a parent it is important that you do the research to familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of the most common infections that kids get including, chicken pox, measles, ringworm, colds & flu. Most common is the ?tummy ache? that can mean almost anything, and while it is normally a 24 hour wonder, it can also be life threatening. This article will help parents to be better prepared to detect an emergency if it happens. That way you can respond quickly and get treatment without waiting unnecessarily. * Interpreting Symptoms of Abdominal Pain in Children * Tummy aches are one of the most frequently complained about problems in children. There are many causes attributed with it, and it is a challenge for the parent or the physician to find out the exact problem. Some cases of abdominal pain need emergency care, so be alert to the degrees of pain you child shows. The causes can be related to food, infections, poisoning, insect bites, etc. Bacteria and viruses are responsible in case of abdominal pain due to infections. Gastroenteritis and stomach flu are some of the examples of infections that can cause stomach aches. Gastroenteritis is the inflammation and irritation of stomach and the gastrointestinal passage. Extra care must be taken by travelers, as the food and drinks can be contaminated at new locations and can lead to traveler?s getting diarrhea. Stomach pain due to viral infections ward off quickly, but bacterial infections demand the intake of antibiotics. In both the cases, some children recover very fast by vomiting and excreting. In case of diarrhea, excess drinking fluids should be given to the kid to avoid dehydration. Some stomach aches can be caused by contaminated foods or drinks, or food allergies. Problems because of food poisoning are temporary and can cause bloating. Symptoms of food poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and nausea. Usually these symptoms surface within two days of consumption of contaminated food. Depending on the severity chill, fever, bloody stools, or damage to the nervous system can follow. In case of a group of people who consumed the contaminated food, this situation is known as an outbreak. Over two hundred diseases are known to be transmitted via food. Food can be poisoned because of toxic agents or infective agents. Infective agents are parasites, bacteria, and viruses. Be aware of various toxic agents like uncooked or undercooked foods, or foods left out of the refrigerator, or simply kept too many days in the refrigerator. Food can get contaminated because of handling by unclean workers at the local restaurant, too. Parents should check out the cleanliness and should visit a trusted restaurant. Particular foods can cause the irritation, such as diary products can cause lactose intolerance. If this is the case, the child is allergic to certain food or drinks and swallowing even a small amount can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, cramping, and skin rash. Parents need to be alert for common food allergies, as that condition is occurring more frequently in kids nowadays than in the past. Since these items are harmless otherwise, such kind of allergic reactions are known as hypersensitivity reaction. Sometimes the symptoms can be life threatening and are known as anaphylactic shock or anaphylaxis. Poisoning can also be due to overdose of medicines and even due to eating non-food stuffs. Insect bites such as black widow spider bite can also lead to pain in the abdomen. It can be accompanied with muscle cramps, weakness, nausea, tremor, vomiting and in severe case it can cause dizziness, faintness, respiratory problems, and chest pain. Also, the heart rate and blood pressure increases. If the pain is severe and unrelenting, be aware of the possibility that your child could be experiencing appendicitis. This is a result of blockage and inflammation of tissues. Young kids have a higher rate if complications are considered and should be immediately rushed to the hospital. The pain starts slowly in the abdomen, specifically near the belly button. The pain shifts slowly to the right side of the lower abdomen within a time period of over twenty four hours. Clear symptoms are abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, fever and loss of appetite. Diabetes can also be a reason of abdominal pain. Small children usually curl up, cry and express pain through facial expression. Some kids will be reluctant to talk, but the parent should try to get clear explanation of the problem. Along with close monitoring of the symptoms, studying the location of pain, pain duration, nature of vomiting, and urinary problems will help. After that a pediatric should be consulted who can further refer to a gastroenterologist. Parents should do anything they can to keep the child relaxed and calm until help is reached. Often, lying with face in downward direction can relieve pain due to gas. In the case of vomiting and diarrhea, fluids should be given to the child to drink constantly. Parents should wait for approval before they give the kid any solid foods at the time of the attack.
Connect the Fitness, Fun Fit Tips for Educators Looking to Inspire Healthy Lifestyles for Grade School Age Kids
March 11th, 2010
When it comes to our kids’ health, we want to inspire them. We see everything they could become and we want them to see it for themselves. We try to inspire kids so they want to live a healthy and active lifestyle, so they can reach the potential we see in them. But where does that inspiration come from? How can kids see the creation of a healthy lifestyle as a fun thing? How do we make learning about health and fitness something they can actively participate in? And most importantly how can we inspire the kids in a way where they take responsibility for the development of their fit and active lifestyle?
It seems like a tall order. But the key here is inspiration. It might seem like a hard won commodity, but all my experiences as a trainer have proven that inspiring health starts with one simple step:
Believing in their potential, showing them you believe, and engaging them to find and create their own healthy lifestyle.
Another way to think about this simple step comes from the relationship between a trainer and a client. A good trainer always acts a coach for their client; while the client strives in competition with themselves, challenging themselves to reach their goals and meet their potential.
When it comes to our kids, our job as educators is the same: Help the kids see their potential, instill the skills and knowledge they can use to create their own healthy lifestyle, and let them have some fun doing it.
An incredibly fun example of an activity that we can do with our kids to inspire the creation of a healthy lifestyle is the “Healthy and Fit Olympics”. In this activity the entire class is one team competing against themselves, with the teacher playing the coach. This way the entire class acts a team trying to beat their own personal bests from the beginning of the competition. At the end of the year, the champions (everyone who beats their own personal bests) get medals that the class can design for themselves. And if the entire class as a team reaches all their goals: the entire class gets a trophy.
The activity starts at the beginning of the year: the kids make a movie, comprised of interviews with each kid and footage of each kid participating in a physical activity. Then all year long the class trains to become “healthy and fit champions”.
A big component of the “Healthy and Fit Olympics” is the activities to get ready for the competition. Some prime examples of multi-faceted “training” activities come from adapting the old stand-by: the relay race into a fun hybrid of a race with strong emphasis on nutrition.
Relay Race One: Racing Towards Health
Have the kids trace an outline of a healthy body and post in on a wall as a goal. Then have each group of racers cut out seven pictures of healthy foods/activities. Have the kids use the healthy pictures as the hand-off racing the healthy pictures towards the goal. Whatever team’s Body is full of the healthy pictures first wins. (UPGYM will even provide your class trophies for the winning teams).
Relay Race Two: Connecting the Fitness
Have the class decide on a picture of health, then make an outline of the picture—in dots. Each kid then picks a dot and races towards a spot on the floor corresponding to their dot’s location on the picture. When all the kids are in their places, you get involved by running around “connecting their dots” thus finishing the picture.
Some Other Training Activities
• Agility: Eraser drills
• Speed: Sprinting drills
• Coordination: Playing catch, throwing medicine balls
• Flexibility: Lunges and squats
• Balance: Single leg hops
For examples of these and other activities visit: www. survivalseattle. com]
At the end of the year videotape the competition and the award ceremony and watch it with the kids. They will have worked hard all year to learn about what makes a healthy lifestyle. Letting them watch their performance will solidify the fact that they reached their goals and lived up to their potential. Their experiences over the year training to become a “Healthy and Fit Champion” will carry on, providing them with self-confidence and skills to live a healthy and fit life.
It all starts with inspiration. If we believe in our kids, and challenge them to set their own goals and reach their potential—if they know you believe they can do it and their whole class (as their team) is rooting for them—They will become the champions of their own fitness.

Someone, please make my kid eat!
March 11th, 2010
“It is a war of wills. He doesn’t budge nor do I. He is a good opponent I can say, he guesses my next move and then just disappears. I am talking about the daily tussle between me and my son to eat. He will eat only aloo and leave the rest. If I mask the carrots in the soup he will smell it and make a dirty face”.
If this common complaint with you too, and are at wits end to how to make your child eat, and then here are some tips to get you going!
Small starts, Small Portions: Don’t intimidate your kid with lots of vegetables and varieties in big quantities. Give him/her small quantities, generally you add one teaspoon, per year of your child. Now, make sure he tries at least one bite of each portions. You will find, with small quantities he takes the plunge and tastes everything and he may also realize that some of it even doesn’t taste that bad after all. The food isn’t wasted, you haven’t raised your voice and everyone is happy.
Don’t forget who is the boss: Several times, the food decisions are made by the kids depending on what they like. This is likely to rob them of what’s good for them. No matter what your child may feel about a particular food, you have to serve him a mixture of fruits, vegetables, cereals and pulses. He will protest and make a fuss but hold your ground and you will find him eating all of it.
Don’t nag and shout: Firstly don’t use food or meal time as a part of your discipline routine. Meal time should remain the same even if he is a saint or a devil that particular day. We may try to prevent them from misbehaving if we don’t give him the special treat but in the long run it doesn’t pay off.
Prepare them: Tell them half an hour before that meal will be served soon. This way, he is ready for it and puts away his toys and his books. He will also not be the cranky self when forewarned.
No distraction, please: If TV was your savior when you used to feed your child, with the cartoons providing the distraction needed to stuff the morsel in his mouth; Stop it. It is not a good idea. When food is eaten with a distracted mind or in a hurry, it is not properly chewed so that well digested. Switch off the TV and make food the activity.
Presentation, Presentation, Presentation: What makes Pasta rule over Poha and Sandwich over Dosa?- Presentation. Kids are convinced that these are cool foods and hence have no trouble eating them. So what do you do? Be creative and create new dishes like- fusion dosas with lots of vegetables, cheese, make Poha colorful, serve upma with sev and give them cool names, for example –Sevai is Grated Rice noodles and doodh is the coolest health drink that keeps superman on his toes etc. Replace superman with whichever is his or her favorite hero. more detail on this link. . . http://www. medimanage. com/my-kids-health/articles/someone-please-make-my-child-eat. aspx

3 Essential Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy While Growing Up
March 11th, 2010
You certainly love your children; however, are you paying close attention to the living habits you are teaching them? Are you seriously concerned about what they eat, drink, breathe, and touch? In an environment that is pH balanced, the immune system remains strong and disease can’t get in. If your pH is acidic, your immune system becomes weaker, making your body vulnerable to illness. When you or your kids get sick, it is because of the unhealthy habits and bad choices we incur in. In order to ensure your kids grow up healthy and strong, pay attention to these tips and reinforce them both at home and away from it:1. Free their bodies of toxinsOur bodies are capable of healing and cleaning themselves as long as our immune system is healthy. Today’s environment is plagued with toxins, chemicals, and pesticides that are ingested by your children in the foods they eat, the air they breathe, and the things they touch. Nowadays, in order to be completely healthy, we have to attack the problem from the root; otherwise, we will be only treating symptoms. Kids should exercise regularly and must have healthy sleep schedules. They should not be exposed to stress, should learn about personal hygiene care, and should get regular spinal adjustments to improve their health as they grow. You may know about all this, but it is time you put it to practice. 2. Teach them to eat healthy foods and get them away from junk foodsWhat you feed your kids determines their health to a great extent. Healthy food will keep their cells vigorous and their immune system strong; it will energize them and give them all the nutrients they need to enjoy perfect health. Sadly, our society has bombarded your children with the promise of endless fun and excitement through highly processed and fast foods that have no nutritional value and are loaded with refined sugars and grains, chemicals, additives, and preservatives, not to mention the ones loaded with antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, artificial ingredients, and heavy metals. This junk tastes good, but gives no energy and doesn’t nourish their cells to help them work efficiently. On the other hand, foods like organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains such as brown rice, millet, buckwheat, and oats, provide many vitamins, minerals, and fiber. 3. Teach them healthy habits to prevent diseaseOur bodies are composed of 80% water. This liquid is indispensable to prevent sickness and to heal the body. Water carries crucial elements, oxygen, hormones, and chemical messengers throughout the body, and it greatly improves digestion, the absorption of nutrients, skin hydration, and cleansing of the body, boosting its health. It’s the ultimate detox cleanser! In other words, many diseases can be prevented by learning the habit of drinking lots of water; for example, headaches, hypertension, ulcers, morning sickness, back pain, asthma, fatigue, and slow metabolism, are just some of the aches and illnesses that can be improved or even disappear by keeping the body well hydrated. By teaching your kids healthy habits, you are making sure their energy stays intact; however, this is just the beginning. These tips work in terms of prevention, so, the earlier you enforce them, the better the quality of life your kids will experience. Even if it means a drastic change of habit, your kids’ health is worth it. If you liked this article, tell all your friends about it. They’ll thank you for it.
